Thinking of adding some space to your home? Start with a wonderful design. You can get that wonderful design with time well spent as you decide what functionality is most important to you, and what aspects are most appealing.
Think about exactly how you would like to use this new space in your home. Remember "Form Follows Function"? This especially holds true for how you will integrate the new square footage into your existing home. Why do you want to add on to your current home? Who will use this new space and when? How will the new space enhance the old space? Are there any restrictions to your plans from your municipality?
We recommend that you gather pictures of rooms and features of homes and new living spaces that appeal to you. What appeals to you about a particular home, look, or someone else's addition? Keep an ongoing file of everything that strikes your fancy. After a while, you will start to get a view of what you will ultimately want, and it will be easier to set your priorities.
Your addition should be fully integrated into either your existing style of home, or the addition should be part of a new exterior makeover. Have you ever seen homes where it looks like "the home has been added to the addition", or where you can tell exactly where the original home ends and the new addition begins? A great design avoids these pitfalls.
You can add new foundation, and connect it with your existing basement to add even more space to your home. Or, additions can be built on a "slab", or concrete platform. Additions can involve adding a second or third floor, or a combination of basement, first, and second floor.
