One of the hottest trends this year is expanding our entertainment spaces with outdoor living rooms, improved decks and patios, and even installing great outdoor kitchens that make entertaining a large crowd so easy.

First Step = Function:

What will you use this outdoor living space for? Do you need to create multiple outdoor areas for cooking, gathering, and play? How will this new outdoor space be integrated with your existing home and the corresponding exits from the house? Who will use these new outdoor areas?

Find what you like:

We recommend that you gather pictures of outdoor decks, patios, and kitchens that have features that you find appealing. Keep an ongoing file of everything that strikes your fancy. After a while, you will start to get a view of what you will ultimately want, and it will be easier to set your priorities.

Most important:

Take your time. There are many decisions involved in any exterior remodeling project, and there are ways to keep the process organized and smooth. However, an essential element is that you have had the opportunity to review your choices and feel comfortable with your final decisions.

Options:

As with many of our decisions, decide what your budget is and let it drive your choices. The range of deck and patio materials, exterior lighting, and outdoor kitchen/entertaining products can be overwhelming. The range of prices can be broad too. Decide how you would like to invest in your outdoor deck or patio vs. what might be good for someone else.
